A recent survey has been conducted in Australia to gather information on the extent of independent contracting in the labour force and the impact of the recruitment and employment services industry. The survey identified 576,000 contractors that had found their job through a "labour hire/employment agency" and 23% of those were employed by the "labour hire/employment agency". The survey also identified the main reason cited by 55% of the people surveyed for using a recruitment or labour hire company was "ease of obtaining work". 7.4% commented that they like the flexibility of working through a recruitment company. A further 7% said they were working through a recruitment company as they had been unable to find work in their chosen field or industry. Statistics sourced from Shortlist. It's going to get better...No really it is going to get better eventually. Who knows when the recession will bottom out, improve or be over? Every expert has their own opinion on the time lines, but without doubt sometime or another the Global Financial Crisis will be done and dusted and we can return to life as normal. In the meantime there is still work to be done. Click here to read the Kevin's article that featured in the latest edition of New Zealand Construction News. Health & SafetyThe major issue facing contractors employing temporary staff is ensuring that the staff supplied to them, have the skills and capability to complete the tasks required of them. The contractor has to feel confident that these staff being sent to them will not put themselves or others in the workplace at risk. The contractors will need to rely heavily on the recruitment company providing these temporary staff and should ensure that the recruitment company they use, has a good track record for Health and Safety, and has robust policies and procedures in place. The contractor should also ensure that the recruitment company they are looking at using are audited against their health & safety policies and procedures. One of these audit tools could be the Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) through ACC. Tradestaff hold WSMP Tertiary Level Status with ACC in recognition of our continued commitment to excellence in Health and Safety practices. This will guarantee that the temporary staff coming from Tradestaff will be thoroughly tested, inducted and provided with all the correct PPE to be able to perform their duties safety and in a manner keeping with the Contractor.
